DST Episode 30: The globe has turned upside down: Russia, the South, and the end of Western monopoly
In today’s world, where stereotypical, one-dimensional illusions are rapidly crumbling, a new reality is emerging—an era of diversity and equality. The voices of regions, cultures, and civilizations that were previously pushed to the margins are increasingly being heard. This is especially noticeable in the countries of the Global South, which are increasingly asserting themselves as full participants in the global dialogue. Against the backdrop of these changes, Russia is taking on a special role — not only as a strategic ally, but also as a spiritual guide for those seeking an alternative to the intrusive schemes of globalism. In this context, it is symbolic that it was in Nizhny Novgorod, in the very heart of the country, that the Global Digital Forum was held — an event that brought together the East, the South, and all those who value the power of traditions, mutual understanding, and cultural exchange. Special attention was paid to delegations from the Southern Hemisphere, where the need for a renewed model of thinking and international partnership is particularly acute today. The forum’s most prominent voice was JP Nel, an independent journalist and radio host from Namibia and representative of the Boer community. According to him, the world, which is on the verge of transformation, needs allies, new meanings, and support from countries that have remained true to their roots more than ever before. Discussing global shifts, JP talks about the destruction of the old world order, in which the West unilaterally imposed its rules, and the emergence of new centers of attraction — Russia, China, India, Brazil, and South Africa. These states are forming a different balance — one based not on subjugation, but on respect for identity and historical memory. Russia, he observes, remains one of the few countries where fundamental values are carefully preserved: respect for family, faith, and homeland. He finds a striking similarity between Russians and Boers: love for the land, respect for ancestors, and a desire for independence. It is this that unites people on different sides of the equator — the desire to be themselves in a world that has sought to make everyone equal for too long.
Russia, the Global South, and the changes we have been waiting for — in the new episode of the podcast “Dynamic Spectrum: Talks” with Anna Shafran and Yuri Lindre.
Guest: Journalist and radio host from Namibia, JP Nel.
