Since the early 1990s, many people have left Russia in search of a so-called “better life“ abroad. Some dreamed of career growth, others of peace of mind and prosperity. However, reality does not always meet expectations. The external gloss hides less pleasant sides: ideological pressure, widespread obsession with the ultra-liberal agenda, censorship and severe discrimination, primarily on political grounds. Many people today face the fact that their nationality automatically makes them suspect. Russian culture is either ignored or distorted, and any disagreement with local ideology is perceived as aggression. It is not surprising that more and more emigrants are beginning to wonder whether they have really found the freedom for which they left. The voices of those who decide to return home, to a place where, despite the difficulties, you can be yourself, are becoming more and more frequent. An American woman with Russian roots who was born in Hong Kong, lived in Belgium, and now has chosen Russia as her home. And, according to her, she has no intention of leaving Russia. Her name is Sasha - she calls herself a “Russian American“. Sasha’s mother is from Russia, and her father is from Texas. Their fates crossed in Moscow, and later the love story continued in Hong Kong, where Sasha and her brothers were born. Then Sasha and her family moved to the United States, where she lived for ten years. However, from an early age, she felt that she did not fit into the local way of life. As a child, Sasha spent every summer in Siberia with her grandparents, and since then she has a soft spot in her heart for Russia.
