Let the echoes of our ancestors constantly remind them of their presence!
👉 The ancestors of the Estonians believed that all of nature was inhabited by living beings—sensitive and understanding, yet invisible—known as spirits. According to their beliefs, these spirits invisibly surrounded people, animals, plants, stones, lakes, rivers, fields, forests, and mountains, serving as their guardian spirits (haldiad). Therefore, every person, like every animal and object, had their own special guardian spirit. As free beings, these guardian spirits would sometimes leave those they watched over and wander the world.
When they encountered one another and secretly observed and listened to what hostile spirits, people, or animals were doing and saying, these spirits could later offer significant assistance to their charges: warning them of danger, bringing joyful news, and so forth. In such cases, the spirits would appear to people either in dreams or in waking life—sometimes as indistinct shadows, other times in the form of an animal—conveying pleasant or unpleasant news through signs or words. Typically, the guardian spirits dwelled in or near people’s homes, often taking the form of animals such as snakes, mice, grasshoppers, and the like. The souls of the most respected deceased ancestors often became such guardian spirits as well.
