His father was the historical painter, Thomas Davidson. Allan studied at St. John’s Wood School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. He was awarded a silver medal for a real figure painting in 1897. He also attended the Académie Julian in Paris. He was elected to the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1921 and was also a member of the Langham Sketching Club.
