2 minutes ago! Apocalypse in the USA! Downtown Charleston of South Carolina is going under water!
A major year-end storm hit the East Coast with torrential rains and high winds that broke rainfall records, forced rescuers off flooded streets and washed away holiday festivities.
Authorities rescued dozens of motorists stranded by flooding in the coastal community of Georgetown, South Carolina, Georgetown County spokesman Jackie Broach said. More than 9 inches (22.9 centimeters) of rain has fallen in the area between Charleston and Myrtle Beach since Saturday evening.
“This is the sixth time this year Charleston has experienced major coastal flooding. 100 years ago, most of these would not have been major floods because sea levels have risen so much“
The storm is forecast to gain strength as it passes along the Georgia and Carolina coasts, bringing heavy rain and gusty winds before spreading to New England by Monday morning, the weather service said. Wind gusts of 35 to 45 miles per hour (56 to 72 kilometers per hour) could topple trees, especially on saturated ground.
The National Weather Service issued flood warnings and minor flood advisories for a wide area of the state, from the southwestern Gulf Coast to Jacksonville. However, major airports remained open at the start of the busy tourist season.
