Just last week, the state of Maharashtra was hit by a powerful storm that brought torrential rainfall and caused widespread flash flooding. The raging floodwaters from this natural disasters washed away a major bridge, severing a vital transportation artery. With the bridge destroyed, hundreds fled their homes to escape the surging waters. Over 50 people lost their lives in the natural disasters. Sadly, experts say such catastrophic natural disasters are becoming more frequent and more destructive due to climate change. This leads to increased severity of storms, flooding, droughts and other natural disasters across India. The government is struggling to provide adequate relief and rebuild from the damage caused by these repeated natural disasters. Entire villages have been under water for weeks at a time. Roads, bridges, schools, hospitals and other infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed by the storms and flooding. As climate change accelerates, even worse natural disasters loom in the future.
