Georgian Generals, Queens and Saints in the Byzantine Empire

► Georgian princely houses in the Byzantine Empire
1) Amytzantarantes / Amytzantarioi (Amytzantartantes / Amytzantarioi) - Lazarian / Chanian lineage. They were one of the most prominent people in the history of the Empire of Trebizond in the civil wars of the mid-14th century (Penelope Vougiouklaki, 2003).
2) Apokapes - a family of Georgian origin in Byzantium, who held important positions in the military administration of the empire in the XI century. (War, technology and society in the middle east, by Vernon J. Perry, Malcolm Yapp, Oxford University press 1975, ).
3) Diogenes - his family originated from Cappadocia. Ethnicity is still unknown. However, it is known that Cappadocia has been the home of the Mushki since ancient times. Musks, as well as Meskhes, were also called Syro-Cappadocians (Syrian-Cappadocians) - see Source: Syro-Cappadocians (Mushki).
4) Doranites - Lazic/Chanic aristocratic family in the Empire of Trebizond, originating in Chaldea, Mesochaldia province, namely from Dreyona (Kobata).
5) Gabras - a feudal clan of Lazic origin in Byzantium, which advanced significantly in the XI-XII centuries and became the rulers of semi-independent Chaldia (Greater Lazet, Khalib lands). The Gabras were known for their anti-imperial sentiments (R.M. Bartikian 1987).
6) Hagiotheodorites / Hagiorites - a Georgian family working in Byzantium. A prominent representative of this family was Giorgi Hagiotheodorit / Giorgi Hagiorit, also known as Giorgi Mtatsmindeli. He was one of the founders of Iveron Monastery in Athos. (Byzantium in the Iconoclast Era (ca. 680-850) - Leslie Brubaker, John F. Haldon, Robert G. Ousterhout. 2001. pp. 239, 313).
7) Kavasites - a Lazic princely clan in Byzantium.
8. Komachites - Lazic princely clan in Byzantium.
9) Mourouzis - lineage of Lazic origin. “The lineages of the Ypsilanti and Muruzi who were related may have been partly Laz. They came from Trebizond, where they seem to have been engaged in sailing and farming.“ (The struggle for Greek independence: Essays to mark the 150th anniversary of the Greek war of independence. 1973. Richard Clogg, ).
10) Misimates (Misimates) - a Lazic princely clan in Byzantium.
11) Tarchoniates / Tarkhaniates / Tarkhaneiotes (Tarchaneiotes / Trachaniates / Thrachaneiotes / Tarchoniates) - most likely a family of Georgian origin in Byzantium. The Georgian origin of this lineage is confirmed by Claude Cahen - a famous French orientalist and historian of the 20th century. However, there is a version of their Bulgarian origin.
12) Tornikios / Tornikes / Tornikes - the same as Taronites - a Georgian (probably Meskhian or Lazic) lineage promoted in Byzantium.

13) Tzanichites - advanced Lazic lineage.
14) Scholars (Scholares) - advanced Lazic lineage.
15) Bakurians / Pakourianos / Pakourianos - advanced Georgian family in Byzantium.
16) Iberitze / Iberitzeb (Iberitzes) - Georgian family in Byzantium.
17) Bagwashes / Liparitids (Baguashi) - Georgian ancestry in Byzantium.
18) Chaldze - Georgian family in Byzantium. The Chaldze family was a Georgian noble family that held high positions in the Byzantine Empire. One of the prominent representatives of this family was Nikifor Chaldze, who served as a general of Byzantium in the 10th century. He participated in military campaigns against the Arabs, especially in the region of Cilicia.
19) Bagrationi - Georgian family in Byzantium. The Bagration dynasty was a prominent Georgian royal family that ruled the Kingdom of Georgia for several centuries. The members of the Bagration dynasty had connections and relations with the Byzantine Empire. For example, George II of Georgia came from the Bagration family and became a general of the Byzantine Empire.
20) “The Ypsilantis and Mourouzis families, which were intermarried and may have been partly of Laz extraction , came from Trebizond , where they seem to have been engaged in petty shipping and farming.“ (The Struggle for Greek Independence: Essays to Mark the 150th Anniversary of the Greek War of Independence. 1973.
