Titles read: ’Now Pathe Pictorial has pleasure in presenting - ERIC WOODBURN - the celebrated character singer from the Windmill Theatre, London, in BOOTS!’
Pathe Studio.
Eric Woodburn, dressed in pith helmet, puttees and uniform of a British soldier of the Boer War era complete with rifle at his shoulder, sings ’Boots’. A very melodramatic song about the misery of being a soldier in Africa. He sings of ’Boots, Boots, Boots, marching up and down again’.
He interrupts the song for a dramatic monologue. He describes how his boots should be marching down an English lane, while shots of rural England appear on screen. He goes on to tell that his boots belonged to “Bill ’awkins’, who ’doesn’t need ’em now, lying so stiff and still“. Towards the end of number he begins to lose it, ranting on about the boots in very melodramatic fashion.
