On November 20, Mount Ulawun began to erupt in Papua New Guinea.
The volcanic eruption occurred around 15:30 local time.
The column of ash and gas reached a height of 15 km.
Authorities declared level 3 alert due to the eruption.
The eruption is expected to continue indefinitely and the alert level may be raised to Level 4.
Japanese authorities said they were assessing the possible risk of a tsunami spreading to the islands of Izu and Ogasawara.
However, so far no noticeable changes in sea level have been detected at monitoring sites in Japan and beyond.
Ulawun is one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world.
At about 2,300 meters high, the volcano is the highest mountain in the Bismarck Archipelago.
