Hailing from Poland’s ancient capital Krakow, the young producer Krzysztof Junak alias Helucze has been crafting his way toward music since childhood, taking its lead from the increasingly interconnected world out there. Consequently, after two EPs (“Inside Plants” & “Light of the Straw Hats”) released by the American netlabel Avocaudio, he shows off a third one called “Silver Black Boy”, still keeping it fresh and exhibiting sharply varying moods, but at this time attuning in a dub-drenched alignment. Places. Slightest whiffs. Surrounding scents. This EP draws from the fearless way that Helucze plays with the idea that places have an olfactory identity, whose converse is true, smell turns up in surprising places. Beyond getting highly inspired by those, he drops a bass-driven electro-dub that adds a subtle balance of unconventional grooves and whimsical interludes in this seemingly imaginative piece of work that’s simply charming to listen to it. On “Silver Black Boy” EP all the four tracks reveal progressive journeys, ones whose lead bounces between instruments while a mesmeric kaleidoscopic musical montage is being constructed. But notwithstanding this, allowing the depths of dub to shine, skanking across multi-layered scenarios which push a sound as open-ended as it is unmistakable. It isn’t the build and burn of traditional dance. It’s twisted, amusing and builds the foundations for a global spaced-out dub that occasionally pierce through the dreaminess; a dynamic imagery moving quickly but never rushing. Helucze is reminding us that there aren’t actually any rules to this crazy thing called electronic music, always changing and figuring itself out along the way.
