The “Monument to the Liberators of Soviet Latvia and Riga from the German Fascist Invaders“ was built in 1985 to commemorate the Soviet Army’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. Back then, the Baltic nation - now part of NATO and the European Union - was still part of the Soviet Union. The obelisk, crowned with a Red Army star, was a controversial venue in Riga, following Latvia’s independence in 1991.
