Covent Garden, London.
M/S of a porter collecting a barrow from a doorway in Covent Garden market.
Several shots show Terry O’Doherty and others at his Covent Garden workshop, crafting wooden barrows and carving lettering on the painted wheels; another man paints a wheel yellow. Commentator says the barrows are in demand for use in film sets and as display pieces in trendy boutiques. At Terry’s home in Hertfordshire we see him forging metal parts for the barrows.
Several shots of colourful barrows from Terry’s collection of antique horse-drawn vehicles and handcarts; a man uses a knife-grinding cart; a woman buys fruit from an old-fashioned fruit barrow; an organ-grinder entertains some children (no monkey); an authentic western buggy is driven out of the courtyard. An ornate Sicilian lemon cart is seen in detail with adults and children (and horses!) in traditional Sicilian costume.
