Ship Research (1968)

Feltham, Middlesex. At the Ship Division of the National Physical Laboratory we see various tests being made on boat equipment. The effects of turbulence on a propellor screw are checked in a water tunnel; a wax model of the hull of a ship is worked on; a waxen hull is etched with lines along the side, then men scrape the wax into shape. A radio-controlled model ship is put through manoeuvres in a large water tank with a wave-making machine; a model tanker is measured and tested in a circulation water channel for the effects of friction over the hull. Several shots show scientists on a mobile laboratory moving over the water in a huge tank and checking graphs and readings on machines as they go. Good illustration of industrial research laboratories. Note: print is quite badly scratched. On file is a letter from the National Physical Laboratory detailing sequences shot for this story. Cuts exist - see separate record. FILM ID: A VIDEO FROM BRITISH PATHÉ. EXPLORE OUR ONLINE CHANNEL, BRIT
