A large number of pilot whales were helped back into deep water by beachgoers on July 16 after they got stranded on a beach on St. Simons Island in Georgia, U.S. Unfortunately, three died despite rescue efforts. Pilot whales engage in herd-like behavior and have been involved in previous mass strandings around the world. Late last year, 145 got stranded on a beach in New Zealand.
