It consists of a radar-guided 20 mm Gatling gun mounted on a swiveling base and is used by the U.S. Navy on every class of surface combat ship. The CIWS is designed to be the last line of defense against anti-ship missiles, with an effective range Of 1-5 nautical miles and 4,500 rounds per minute rate-of-fire.
