Alexandre Tansman - 3 Preludes en forme de blues (audio + sheet music)
Tansman’s characteristic generosity extended to scattering musical riches in the letterboxes of all his friends, including the concert agent and producer Bernard Laberge, the dedicatee of Trois Préludes en forme de Blues of 1937, published by Eschig, and premiered by Tansman in San Francisco in the same year. Although this is certainly not the only time that jazz and blues appear in his repertoire, the set is the only set of piano music exclusively dedicated to the style.
The first, in a three-part da capo al fine setting, adheres to the same treatment as the ‘Blues’ from the Huit novelettes: dotted rhythm versus straighter note-values. It may be heard as a modern riff on the tradition of the minuet. The second is the most chromatic of the three and exudes an overall sarcastic air, and the third is motivated by chordal structure and dynamic contrast.
