1959 Indianapolis 500 Film

This is the 43rd Indianapolis 500, run on May 30, 1959. For most of this race, the battle for the lead raged among four top-flight drivers. One was Jim Rathmann, who had already finished second at Indy twice (1952, ’57), another was Rodger Ward, who was erratic early in his career, especially at Indy, where he had finished only once in his first eight tries. The third was pole sitter Johnny Thomson, and the other driver that battled up front was Pat Flaherty, who won the race in 1956 from the pole position (one of just seven drivers to do so at that time).
