A traditional dance known as Tonyamell, which is one of the oldest folk dances in Goa, stands out with its unique charm during the Shigmo festival. Our exploration took us to the village of Barcaim, where tribal communities showcase this enchanting dance for over four days. The dance is centred around sticks known as ’Tonyo’ or ’Toni’, which are handled with great reverence and are never allowed to touch the ground or anyone’s feet. Tonyamell is exclusively performed by male members of the community with immense passion and dedication. It begins with a slow tempo and gradually intensifies into an energetic and vigorous foot-stomping display. Clad in vibrant and colourful clothing and elaborate headpieces adorned with Amboli flowers, the dancers showcase their talent without wearing any footwear during the entire duration of Shigmo, which spans four days. They go from one house to another, while their captivating performance is accompanied by a lively combination of musical instruments such as Ghumat, Shamel, Tasha, cymbals, and gongs. It is truly captivating to see these groups perform, as they create a spectacle. Their show highlights the rich heritage of Tonyamell and offers a mesmerising experience that embodies the essence of Goan tribal traditions. . . .
