REDESCUBRIMOS UNA ESPECIE QUE SE CREÍA EXTINTA EN ARGENTINA: LA NUTRIA GIGANTE O LOBO GARGANTILLA. Los últimos registros confirmados de grupos familiares de nutria gigante en Argentina son de la década de 1980. A partir de ahí solo se conocen algunos registros poco precisos de ejemplares solitarios. En el Río Bermejo la extinción se verificó mucho antes, al menos hace 100 años atrás. O eso creíamos. En el día de ayer, en un alto de nuestras tareas en la Estación de Campo El Teuco, nuestro Director de Conservación, Sebastián Di Martino, salió a kayakear. Al poco tiempo escuchó un chapoteo en el agua, parecía ser un lobito de río. Se detuvo a observarlo ya que no suele ser una especie muy frecuente, pero un grito que produjo el animal lo alertó. Recordaba mucho a los sonidos que profieren Coco y Alondra en su corral de presuelta de Iberá. Ya con el celular en mano comenzó a filmarlo y cuando este animal se irguió en el agua y mostró su pechera blanca no quedaban dudas. Se trataba de un ejemplar de nutria gigante. La inmensa mayoría de las personas que trabajamos en Rewilding Argentina vivimos en el territorio, donde nos dedicamos a crear parques naturales e intentar revertir la crisis de extinción de especies que asola a nuestro planeta. Y la naturaleza nos regala momentos como este casi todos los días. Siempre comunicamos que el proyecto para devolver la nutria gigante en Iberá es el primero que intenta traer de vuelta a un mamífero extinto a nuestro país. Nos equivocamos, y estamos muy alegres en admitirlo. El Impenetrable sigue dándonos sorpresas, mostrándonos que la naturaleza es resiliente y que, si la ayudamos un poco, puede recuperarse. Toca ahora enfriar la cabeza y pensar acciones de conservación para proteger a este ejemplar y a otros que pudiera haber por la zona. Urge patrullar el río Bermejo, hoy en manos de los cazadores furtivos. La nutria gigante, el yaguareté, el ciervo de los pantanos, el venado de las pampas, el guanaco, la tortuga yabotí, están volviendo o volverán pronto al Impenetrable Chaqueño. ______ REWILDING ARGENTINA’S SCIENTISTS REDISCOVERED A SPECIES THOUGHT TO BE EXTINCT IN THE COUNTRY The latest confirmed records of giant river otter family groups in Argentina are from 1980. Since then, only unprecise records of solitary individuals have been reported. Furthermore, the giant river otter extinction in the Bermejo River was confirmed much earlier, at least a hundred years ago. Or so we thought. Yesterday, Rewilding Argentina’s Conservation Director, Sebastian Di Martino, went out for a kayak ride in the Bermejo River. Shortly after he set out, he heard splashes on the water made by what seemed to be a Neotropical otter. As Sebastián stopped to observe more carefully, the animal made a sound that reminded him of Coco and Alondra, the giant river otter couple that we are reintroducing in Iberá. Phone in hand, Sebas started filming the animal. The moment the otter raised its head and exposed its white chest, there were no doubts. It was a giant river otter (Pteronura brasiliensis). Most of us who are part of Rewilding Argentina live in the natural areas where we work to help create parks and reverse the wildlife extinction crisis that threatens our planet. And thus, we are fortunate to receive gifts from nature like this one almost every day. We always said that the project to restore the giant otter in Iberá is the first to return an extinct mammal to Argentina. And we were —happily— wrong. The Impenetrable forest surprises us and reminds us of the ecosystems’ resilience and how they can recover if we help them. Now, it’s time to cool off and design conservation strategies that will help protect this and other giant river otters in the area. Primarily, we must patrol the Bermejo River, which, today, poachers have taken.
