Leigh-on-Sea, Essex. Early morning footage of men walking along a beach - they are cockle fishers. Various shots of the men rowing out to their boats then chugging out to sea. Nice footage of the fishermen at work. Anchor thrown overboard. Men walk through shallow water with wooden rakes, nets and baskets. We see the cockles being gathered and carried back to the boats. We watch the Osborne family gathering the cockles. They have been cockle fishers for many years. Narrator explains how the cockles are harvested and how heavy the shells are. “There is nothing so pure and so good as the fruits of the sea“ says the narrator and explains that now “the race is on“. Footage of cockles being steamed and cooked by Trevor Taylor. The cockles are then sieved. The waste shells are tipped out into huge piles.
