This video is explores some ideas for eliminating unnecessary footwork in multiple attacker practice. When under serious pressure from multiple attackers, it’s difficult for even experienced practitioners to not give in to flight instinct by letting their footwork get out of control.
We’ve come up with a couple of fun exercises for refining aikido “ashi sabaki“, or footwork, and integrating them into multiple attacker practice.
- Deconstructing “Tenkai“ (180-degree body change)
- Tenkai exercise versus two attackers with bokken (sword)
- One-tatami randori (freestyle multiple attackers) vs. weapons
- One-tatami randori (freestyle multiple attackers) vs. open hand
Of course, the footwork in this video isn’t intended to replace traditional tenkan or more mobile footwork against multiple attackers - rather, it’s meant to provide an environment for exploring when our flight instincts trigger wasteful movement, and how to control and minimize
