Man Wears ’7 HAMAS’ Football Shirt | Police Launch Search For Culprit
Police have launched a hunt for a Manchester United fan who was photographed wearing a team shirt with “Hamas 7“ printed on the back.
The unidentified man was seen near Oxford Circus tube station in central London on Friday afternoon. Wearing clothing that supports a proscribed organisation like Hamas, or recklessly expressing support for one, is a criminal offence under Section 12 of the Terrorism Act.
Police will decide whether to arrest or charge suspects on a case-by-case basis.
A Jewish passerby, who photographed the football fan, said he was “very offended” by the shirt. He suggested that the number 7 might refer to the October 7 attacks last year, in which Hamas took 250 hostages and killed 1,139 people in Israel.
Peter Cardwell speaks with former Met detective Peter Bleksley and Jewish Chronicle editor, Jake Wallis Simons.
