WOW: Sky Turns Bright Orange in Minnesota Twins Game
What was happening when the skies turned bright orange at sunset at the Minnesota Twins baseball game on August 26, 2024?
The sun was shooting through the atmosphere at a slant, so the light is going through more atmospheric molecules. Only the longest wavelengths of light - red & orange made it through to be seen by the human eye.
When that light hits a big cloud like a thunderstorm, look out! The thunderstorm’s anvil cloud likely provided this big screen to amplify the orange light.
It’s fairly rare to see it over the whole sky, though being in a stadium amplifies the effect because you can’t see the horizon. Right time, right place!
Red rainbows are not rare but often are colored red by the sunset. At sunset, rainbows are also at their highest angle (tallest).
