Pelagia noctiluca

Washing up on Florida beaches this week (May 2011), common name is “mauve stinger.“ These are likely the cause of most of the stings that have been occurring along Brevard’s beaches this last week and weekend. There have also been some cannonball jellyfish, sea nettle jellies, and Portuguese man-o-war jellies out there too this week. Moderate to strong onshore easterly winds have driven ashore the jellyfish, sargassum weed, and even some sea-beans.
