Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-AES) is a multi-elemental analytical technique used for detection of trace metals (ppb – ppm).
In this video, the essential parts of the ICP-AES instrument, both external and internal, are shown and plasma generation is animated. Plasma generation is a result of the resistance of electrons to move with the circular magnetic field. The up to 10,000 K plasma flame is able to evaporate, atomise and excite metals. On return from excited to ground state, metals release photons of characteristic wavelengths and the photons are detected at the Charge Coupled Device (CCD) detector.
Analysis of multi-element (3 metals) standard of 3 concentrations and construction of 3 external calibration graphs, 1 for each metal, with 3 points each is animated. Subsequent analysis of the sample and the determination of concentration of metals in the sample is also illustrated.
