Girardi Hit by Slap Shot in the Back of the Head and Goes Down Hard 1/7/18 Lighting vs. Red Wings

Tampa Bay defenseman Dan Girardi suffered a scary injury in the second period of Tampa Bay’s road trip finale in Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena. With the Red Wings trailing 2-1 and searching for the equalizer on the power play, Detroit’s Martin Frk lined up a one-timer from the left circle that sailed and appeared to hit Girardi up high with 6:31 to go in the second period. Girardi immediately fell face first onto the ice as trainers from both teams rushed out to his aid. With concerned Tampa Bay and Detroit players watching, Girardi remained down on the ice for a couple minutes before sitting up under his own power. Girardi skated off the ice with some help from Steven Stamkos and Victor Hedman and headed immediately back to the locker room.
