James Saunders, The Ashgate Research Companion to Experimental Music: ”Over a period of a few months, starting in August 2007, Beuger composed ten melodies of four phrases each day, using a kind of notational shorthand. This quickly became a very large repertoire that Beuger has continued to add to, somewhat less regularly. The progress can be observed by the composer’s musical friends by checking a website he created for this purpose. Having no particular instrumentation, each melody can be seen as a potential for a piece and this is in fact what Beuger is doing, by using this material as the basis for completed works. A series of these pieces, called aus den liedern, assigns poetic texts by a mysterious process to some of the individual melodies from auch da. The effect of this (nearly) chance coming together of text and tune is surprising: it is as if the melody were lying in wait for the text, which, at the same time, is given new meaning by the contours of the tune”.
