The Oneida People (Onyota’a:ka or, Onayotekaono), meaning: “The People of the Upright Stone, or Standing Stone”, are a Indigenous First Nations People and are one of the five founding nations of the Iroquois Confederacy (Haudenosaunee) in the area of upstate New York.
Originally, the Oneida People inhabited the area that later became Central New York, particularly, around Oneida Lake and Oneida County. For many years the Iroquois maintained their autonomy, battling the French who were allied with the Huron, traditional enemy of the Iroquois.
