Giga Allegro Jacobus Nozeman’s Op. 1 is one of the hidden gems of the Dutch baroque. Unlike his Op. 2, it’s written in the high baroque Italian style with the notable exception of the two final dance movements. It’s played here not on violin but on an original 18th century Dutch soprano recorder by Engelbert Terton (a really exceptional recorder, worth looking at some pictures of the silver decorations) with just a lute for continuo. Quite the charming combination of instruments that I feel makes this piece sound more intimate, something you would hear being played from someone’s living room if you were roaming the streets of 18th century Amsterdam. The prelude is played on another 18th century original recorder, this time a tenor recorder by Pierre Jaillard (Peter Bressan).
