It began on July 1, 1916 as part of a major Anglo-French offensive against the German positions. It was broken off on November 18 of the same year without having brought about a military decision. With over a million soldiers killed, wounded, and missing, it was the costliest battle on the Western Front during World War I, at losses close to those of the Eastern Front’s Brusilov Offensive.
