South American leaders say they are looking for economic alternatives to stop the wave of legal and illegal deforestation across the Amazon. Eleven million families in the Brazilian Amazon are suffering from poverty and hunger, making them vulnerable to crime. Now Acai berries are proving to be part of the solution.
