THE SONGBIRD: Tatiana Sterling [Татьяна Стерлинг] (sometimes spelled Tatyana) was a concert soprano based in Moscow. She was born in 1942, completed piano studies in 1963, and then worked at the school of music in Kalinin as a teacher and an accompanist. In 1965, she entered the Moscow Gnesinn Pedagogical Institute of Music, where she graduated in 1972. Sterling was a third-year student when she joined the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra as a soloist. She sang the Verdi and Mozart “Requiems,“ and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and “Missa Solemnis.“ She gave recitals and toured Leningrad, Riga, Vilnius, Kiev, and Siberia, and continued to teach music. THE MUSIC: “The Magic Flute“ (“Die Zauberflöte“) premiered on September 30, 1791 in Vienna, just two months before Mozart’s death.
