“The Woman of My Dreams“ (“Die Frau meiner Träume“) was one of the last massive film musicals of the Third Reich. Marika Rökk, athletic dancer, singer and comedienne, plays a revue star who gets into all kind of complications. This witty comedy, filmed in glowing Agfacolor, premiered in Berlin on August 25, 1944, less than two months before the US troops took the first German city, and was exceedingly popular right until the fall of the Nazi Germany. Then the film was picked up as a war loot (“trophy film“) by the Soviets, and, paradoxically, enjoyed huge popularity across the Soviet Union. The grand finale was for years a mandatory viewing in the Cinema Institute of the USSR.
After the war, Marika Rökk (herself a Hungarian) was banned from working for four years, because both Hitler and Goebbels adored her and she, reportedly, returned their kindness. Then she went on with her career, which lasted 56 years on the stage, films and TV. She was able to pick up successfully, because Stalin was another dictator who liked her films and several were produced under the SovExpoFilm banner straight for the Soviet market.
I’ve restored this opening number of the film to what I believe looks the best anybody has ever seen. The source material came from the recently released bluray, which, however, wasn’t digitally restored. Now, the film looks like never before!
