Purvis Young at JAMES FUENTES

James Kalm returns to the James Fuentes Gallery to capture some unobstructed views of the Purvis Young exhibition. Purvis Young (1943-2010) is one of the artists who have recently changed the perception and appreciation of self-taught African American art by the mainstream art establishment and institutions. Well known and respected by his tight knit community in Overtown Florida, Young, through his painting, seemed to embody the sprit of his environment and the love and struggles of its inhabitants. Working on found boards, and using paint (some scavenged from hardware stores), this master was able to work these abject materials into poignant narratives of subtle coloration and a feathery yet confident brushstroke.
