For just over a decade, Steven Isserlis - the dedicatee of Pletnev’s 2006 Cello sonata - had also stayed its only performer. «We were chatting about composing music next to Misha’s car in Verbier» - he recalls. «I asked him if he ever considered writing something for the cello. “What do you want?“, he said. “Well, a sonata would be nice“, was my response.
