Northern Flicker

Northern “Yellow-shafted“ Flicker, Colaptes Auratus, excavating nesting cavity. Fairfield County Ohio, April 2020. Northern Flickers are large woodpeckers. They are often seen foraging on the ground for ants and beetles. They penetrate the ground with their curved bill. In the east, the underside of the Northern Flicker’s wings is yellow. In the west, it is red.
