Japanese Indigenous community decries US, Canadian military presence on Okinawa Island

Editor’s note: The current version of the story states U.S. military bases account for 8% of the Okinawa main island (as also reported by Reuters, including in the fourth paragraph here: ), however, a correction was made to that VO that U.S. bases account for nearly 15% of the main island (they cover 8% of the prefecture of Okinawa). On the island of Okinawa in Japan, Indigenous rights have become a rallying cry. It’s home to a U.S. military base used by Canada, a base that’s been a source of conflict and controversy for decades.
