Japanese Yamabushi Monks in a Shugendo Fire Walking Festival

The Yamabushi are the mountain monks of Japan that practice an esoteric form of Buddhism called Shugendo. Shugendo’s history and practices vary from region to region but the goal is the same; a spiritual awakening, achieved through rigorous physical practices often in the mountains under harsh conditions. Today the Yamabushi monks, initiates and laymen walked through the fire lit by the coals of a sacrificial fire. The festival is called the Renge Festival and was held atop Mt. Kongo which straddles the border of Osaka and Nara Prefectures. *If you would like to help support the channel, please use the PayPal link or the Bitcoin address.
