Due to the popularity and interest in the project, I have decided to make it into a product called LocoFi. As such, I have created an exclusive channel at Please subscribe to the new channel to receive updates on the project.
You can find more information about LocoFi at . More updates can be found at our Facebook page as well.
Please note that I will be shutting down this channel soon.
MISSION:
Simplify operating and management of model railroading trains and other electronics.
OVERVIEW:
Control your trains without needing the complex DCC equipment. Simply put your WiFi decoder equipped trains on a pure DC or DCC track (if you already have it), connect them to your existing WiFi home network (or a dedicated router) and control them using a smartphone app, web browser or a custom built handheld control with knobs and dials.
FEATURES:
- No need to convert existing layout; If you’re on DC (9-24V), you’re just fine.
- Runs on DCC track power as well!
- It’s not DCC; It’s pure WiFi!
- Required - home network; who doesn’t have one and the WiFi decoder. Control using smartphone app, handheld controller (if really needed), computer, browser, etc.
- Runs off of your home network or even remotely
- No decoder programming required; only configuration using GUI. For example, do you want to mute the sounds or set a certain volume, connect to a different network, set the loco bell frequency or the blinking lights. Just touch/tap or use your mouse to click, move sliders, etc. No “F“ keys to punch.
- Customize settings/preferences or even update to the latest firmware using a browser or the app.
- 8 bit 16 kHz polyphonic sound; upload your own sounds to the micro SD card. Just pop the card out, copy the custom edited sounds from your computer and plug it back in. Again, no programming needed just sound editing software like Audacity.
- By the way, the sound comes out of the locomotive, not the smartphone and the SD card plugs into the decoder.
- Polyphonic like 3-4 sounds simultaneously.
- Smooth slow start.
- No typical dirty track issues; if track is really dirty supercap circuit option or a small rechargeable battery can be plugged in (which will charge back up when there is power on the track).
- Decoder fits inside most HO locos (approx 3.5“ X 0.7“); compatible with NMRA plug standards.
- Upload run stats to cloud; generate reports.
- Still more to come; stay tuned for updates!
- Feedback welcome!
This is a work in progress.
UPDATES:
- The WiFi decoder PCB that fits HOs is ready! Just like a DCC decoder the WiFi decoder is compatible with NMRA standards with 7 or 8 wires. It uses ESP8266 (for WiFi) and Arduino (for polyphonic sound). Microcontroller programming, circuit design, Android app and the PCB design was completely done by me from scratch following several iterations of product refinement.
