Captain Merriam’s Escape (1910-1929)

Titles read: ’Capt. FW Merriam had a lucky escape.’ Location of events unknown. Merriam climbs into glider. Horrific shot as the glider lifts up into the air; then blows backward a bit; the nose turns downward and the glider crashes into crowd of onlookers who jump aside. Many people run toward the wreck; also mounted policeman. MS 2 men cutting open wrecked glider to rescue pilot. Title: ’Mr FP Raynham - making wonderful flight of nearly 2 hours’. Another glider story: Raynham seated in the aircraft. He pulls down a square door w/ hole in it over his head; so that his head sticks out through the hole; above the glider’s wings. Shots of glider in flight over fields & rolling hills; looking up as it flies over etc. CU R.’s head sticking out of square on top of the glider. Title: ’Ilford. First British Gliding Competitions.
