‘Big Questions’
Written by Sarah Morris (all rights reserved)
8 years old I’m flying down the stairs
Tears too big for my body, struggling for air
My mom on the couch watching TV, eating ice cream
About ready to call it a night
To that laugh track in the background
my words came pouring out
With the force of a firehose, opened up
to cool off a city block
in the black heat of summertime
And I started with
Why am I here there must a reason
Where do we go when it’s over
What do they mean when they say time and space
are infinite
On and on without an end
How can that be
You see I have these
Big Questions, giving me
big feelings, searching for
Big Answers
To satisfy
Any of my
Big Questions
What started in that living room kept running through the years
My heart tripping over wondering, worrying, and fear
And a nagging sense I must be the strange here
Since everyone around me isn’t losing their mind
And the older I got the more I tried to shut the door
at least focus my gaze on the troubles before me
I mean, what good was it doing, all the pulse racing, mind chasing
Lying awake counting clock strikes
Spiraling
Why am I here there must be a reason
Where do we go when it’s over
What do they mean when they say time and space
are infinite
On and on without an end
How can that be
You see I have these
Big Questions, giving me
big feelings, searching for
Big Answers
To satisfy
Any of my
Big Questions
In my twenties I fell asleep with Plato in hand
Lately I’ve been giving the Bible a chance
Most days though I’m thinking it’s the poets you know,
who truly understand
With your one wild and precious life
What do you want to do?
Thank goodness, Mary Oliver, you had them, too
Big Questions
And that gives me big feelings
Searching for a Big Answer
To satisfy
Any of my
Big Questions
