The traditions on which this brewery was founded date back to the 16th century. Following the rules of the German Purity Law, this simple yet complex dunkel blew our minds with its notes of walnut, red wine and chocolate. Dark beers were being made in Bavaria long before the advent of pale, lighter beers such as lagers. This dunkel was the first brew to be served in the historic Hofbräuhaus in Munich, making it one of the most relevant and storied beers we’ve reviewed to date.
