In this short harmonic study I illustrate a concept I use to substitute or tonally translate the chords of a ii-V7-I progression in a major key with “sus4” type chords and their related harmonic varieties to add a more open, etherial and modern sound to the classic back bone of jazz harmonic movements.
The study covers the theory and chordal substitution practices behind this approach and contains 4 examples of some of my favorite ways to apply the concept in my own playing style.
All examples are demonstrated in the key of C Major but I invite you to explore the concepts in different keys as well as different harmonic progressions.
