The first Jaeger Corps, the Zealand Jaeger Corps, was formed in 1785 as skirmishers.
Several other Jaeger Corps were formed, but in 1860 they were reformed into infantry battalions.
The current Jaeger Corps was formed in 1961 as special forces, with focus on long range reconnaisance, and carries the lineage of the Zealand Jaeger Corps.
The foundation of the modern Jaeger Corps was based on the British Special Air Service and the American Army Rangers.
The term “Jaeger“, literally meaning “hunter“, refers to light infantry and skirmishers in many Germanic languages, and their original military role and origin can be compared to the English “Ranger“ or the French “Chasseur“. Unlike some other militaries, where “Jaeger“ and equivalent terms still refer to light infantry, the Danish military terminology has shifted into “Jaeger“ meaning the special forces of the army, and it is sometimes also used in Danish to refer to foreign army spe
