Simple keepsake box design

I’ve started to post videos of some of my designs that I think are simple enough for a beginner woodworker. This is one of those videos. The basic construction can be made out of one 6”x 8’ board which can be purchased at most big box stores, but I’d start by seeing if there are any local hardwood dealers in your area. Never bad folks to get to know. The main thing I like about this design is that you don’t have to cut separate pieces to make a lid. That’s probably the biggest pain in the ass about making boxes with panel lids. It’s also pretty versatile in that you can cut splines or dowel/dovetail keys to reinforce the mitered corners. That plus the options with decorating the top panel, and this basic design can be taken pretty far. You can also cut the board in a way that it makes it look like the grain is wrapping around box, if you want. I did that once and decided it wasn’t worth the extra work or wood.
