This breed became popular in America in 1912 and was admitted to the American Standard of Perfection in 1914. We are selling the Speckled Sussex because it is a useful dual purpose bird. They are a medium sized heavy breed. The Sussex has a deep broad body which makes it excellent for fattening. Their white skin makes them easy to dress. This variety is called speckled because of the white spangles on the ends of its otherwise dark mahogany colored feathers. Their color also makes them a great predator resistant bird. The Speckled Sussex has a very beautiful plumage that becomes more speckled every year after their molt. The Speckled Sussex is a very curious bird and they love to forage. Because of their large size they do not fly and are easily confined. The Sussex is a very hardy bird and a good brown egg layer. This breed is also known for their egg production in the colder months. Along with being a good dual purpose bird they make excellent pet chickens. The Speckled Sussex is a very gentle chicken that is easily tamed making this breed an all around great backyard chicken.
