Swarm Alpha measures Earth’s warping magnetic field

The near-real time measurements of Earth’s magnetic field taken by ESA’s Swarm Alpha satellite can be seen in this globe. Red indicates areas where the magnetic field is stronger, while blues show it weakening. On 24 March 2024, you can see the severe geomagnetic storm as Earth’s magnetic field braces from the impact of the coronal mass ejection associated with an X-class solar flare emitted early on 23 March 2024. The Swarm constellation is constantly monitoring changes to Earth’s magnetic field, which gives us information about the processes going on deep within Earth’s core all the way to the outer stretches of the atmosphere.
