As in old Russia, where “Kominek zgasł“ was performed by such great singers as Varia Panina, Vera Kholodnaya and Yuri Morfessi, in Poland it has been performed dozens of times by such stars as Stanislaw Ratold, Tadeusz Faliszewski or Adam Aston. For me, of course, Aston’s performance of this lovers’ farewell is the best of all. Aston’s warm and dreamy baritone is simply made for such painful themes. It is just a pity that the album did not make it to our time in better condition. A slideshow presents several photographs of pre-war Polish film and theatre actresses, for whom the men were once completely crazy.
