The Fire Eel is part of the Mastacembelidae or Spiny eel family, so named because of their dorsal spines. This carnivorous fish can grow to over 1.2 metres in length in the wild and so requires a very large aquarium. The Fire Eel requires plenty of hiding places and a soft substrate as it likes to burrow.
