Smuts Receives Freedom Of City (1918)

South African General Jan Smuts receives Freedom of the City; 1918. (Doesn’t say which city). Seems to be at college or university with women students. Smuts walks out of a cathedral with others wearing ceremonial robes and hats; General Smuts himself wears a robe over his Army uniform; thrown back like a cape. Along the sides a crowd of people in ordinary clothing and a group of young women in academic black robes and mortarboard hats. The robed gentlemen give a cheer for General Smuts waving their hats. Then General Smuts and a man in an elaborate robe walk off with a crowd following along; General Smuts reaching over to shake hands with a woman. Shot of girls on a balcony; some wearing the academic dress. Shots panning on row of the smiling young college women (?) standing outside building. Smuts; in uniform; exits building with a lady (Mrs. Smuts?). Young soldier and others follow. CU Smuts talking to aforementioned man in elaborate robe. FILM ID: A VIDEO FROM BRITISH PATHÉ. EXPL
